EU agrees new aquaculture policy
A NEW European Union strategy on aquaculture for member states has been agreed at a Fisheries Council meeting in Luxembourg. Scientific advice shows need to protect spawning fish stocks in North Sea
Annual scientific advice on the status of North Sea fish stocks hasrevealed a small (five per cent) increase in the amount of spawning cod. But an inconsistent approach by EU Member States to the problem of discards still threatens to undermine the future recovery of stocks. WWF is now urging all Member States to enforce strict rules on discards in order to reduce the number of fish that are needlessly caught and thrown overboard. Read more |

2009 Report on Public Finances: fiscal stimulus was needed to support economy, but overall success depends on a credible exit strategy
As the European economy suffers its worst post-war recession, the European Recovery Plan provides needed fiscal support to ailing economies. But rising public debts and the contingent liabilities incurred by governments to support the financial sector, together with the prospected increases in age-related expenditure and slowdown in potential growth raise concerns about public finance sustainability. Deal struck to aid Irish Yes drive on Lisbon
British diplomats said a deal had been done to help the Irish government win a Yes vote on the Lisbon treaty in a referendum in October. A protocol is expected to added to the next European Union treaty – likely to be the Croatian accession treaty – offering assurances that Lisbon does not affect Irish neutrality, taxation and abortion laws. European Commission calls for an open, independent and accountable governance of the internet
The European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union, called, in a strategic document, for more transparency and multilateral accountability in the governance of the internet. Barroso gets EU leaders' blessing for second term
José Manuel Barroso won unanimous backing from EU heads of state and government yesterday (18 June) for a second five-year mandate at the head of the European Commission. He now needs to convince the European Parliament in a vote expected in mid-July. Read more
